Massage and Cancer

Our therapists have received in depth training from Gayle MacDonald, M.S., L.M.T on how to treat patients living with cancer. Each treatment is designed individually to suit the patient's needs and requirements which can be anything from a foot massage to a full body massage.

The following is taken from Gayle MacDonald`s book Medicine Hands: Massage Therapy for People Living with Cancer.

"Dispelling the myths about Metastasis: Facts about how cancer spreads"

"How cancer develops and progresses is still only partially known. However, it is safe to draw some conclusions regarding bodywork and metastasis. The more the medical profession understands about how cancer spreads, the more apparent it is that previous fears about massaging people with cancer are unfounded. The concern that increasing the circulation will cause cancer cells to release from the primary tumor and spread to distant sites is an old wive's tale based on incomplete information. This attitude is understandable in light of prior knowledge. Until the 1970's, it was thought that the ability of tumors to invade or spread to distant sites was the result of simple growth pressure as the tumorous mass increased in size. This alone does not explain how cancer cells travel to secondary sites, nor why certain tumors can growth to a significant size, exert considerable pressure, but never invade or metastasize. Research has shown that pressure alone is not sufficient to cause a tumor to become invasive. (1)

The cellular processes involved in metastatic disease occur while patients go about the most sedate of activities, such as reading, sleeping, or cooking. Refusing all massage to people with cancer will not stop the disease from spreading, but will deny them the many benefits bodywork has to offer during this stressful time.
