Whilst reflexology dates back to Ancient Egypt, India & China, it was not until 1913 that it was introduced to the West by Dr William Fitzgerald.

Whilst reflexology dates back to Ancient Egypt, India & China, it was not until 1913 that it was introduced to the West by Dr William Fitzgerald. He noticed that there was a connection between reflex areas on the hands and feet & other organs and systems of the body. In the 1930’s Eunice Ingham further developed this theory into what we now know as reflexology by observing that congestion or tension in any part of the foot is mirrored in the corresponding part of the body. The entire body is mapped out on the feet (or hands) and is worked through systematically by the reflexologist during a treatment. Reflexology is a complementary therapy which works on the feet to help heal the whole person (mind, body & spirit) including emotional well-being and not just the prevailing symptoms.

How can reflexology help me?

Reflexology can be used to help restore and maintain the body’s natural healthy balance, resulting in good health & well-being. It may help to release congestion & stress/tension from the various systems of the body thereby helping to alleviate dis-ease in the body, mind & spirit.

Who can benefit from reflexology?

Reflexology is suitable for all ages and for every stage of your life from trying to conceive, giving birth, babies & children, adults with health problems, elderly & those in palliative care. This gentle, natural therapy is a relaxing & enjoyable experience and many people use reflexology as a way of reducing stress & relaxing the mind & body as well as helping many common ailments they suffer from.

What happens at a treatment
session?

When coming for your first reflexology session you will be asked to complete a short medical questionnaire. This helps to give the practitioner an understanding of your health issues and any specific needs. You will be asked to remove your footwear and seated in a reclining chair. Gentle pressure will be applied to the various reflex points of both feet (or hands if appropriate). The session normally lasts an hour (including consultation) and will end with some gentle foot exercises & massage. Sometimes after receiving reflexology you may experience a slight healing reaction such as sinuses clearing, a runny nose, runny eyes or a more frequent need to pass water. This is a result of the body eliminating toxins & any reaction felt should not last long. It is advisable to drink water after a treatment to help flush out any toxins. After treatment you normally feel very relaxed, possibly sleepy & sometimes energized.

Reflexology is an Ancient Natural Therapy that uses subtle energies of the feet to create balance and harmony. Balance and harmony enable us to attain and maintain health and well-being. Reflexology continues to establish its reputation and popularity by the effective results people experience. Research studies by Dr Gowrie Motha in London have demonstrated that those receiving regular reflexology during pregnancy can have better pregnancies and have shorter birthing with less intervention than those who did not have regular reflexology treatments.

How Can Maternity Reflexology Help Me?

Maternity Reflexology aims to optimise the health potential of the mother to be and help the body mind and spirit prepare for the arrival of the miracle of a new life. It aids relaxation and may help with some of the following common symptoms during pregnancy;

• Constipation
• Heartburn and reflux
• Emotional disturbances and mood swings
• Swelling
• Back pain and sciatica
• Anxiety and stress

There are also various techniques that can be used which aim to help alleviate Pelvic Girdle Pain.

Reflexology in the post-natal period aims to help restore your body, mind & spirit to a balanced state after the stresses of giving birth. Its aims are:

• encourage your menstrual cycle to return to normal
• assist recovery following an epidural
• aid recovery following a Caesarean section

Reiki is a Japanese word which means Universal Life (Rei) Energy (Ki). Life energy flows through all living things and is essential for healing both the body and the mind. It is a spiritual healing discipline which has its roots in ancient Buddhist teachings.

What Does A Reiki Treatment Involve?

The Reiki therapist channels this healing energy (Ki) through their hands, which are placed on or just above various parts of the recipient’s fully clothed body, in a sequence of positions. This stimulates the body’s own natural ability to heal itself and creates a state of balance. Reiki is used to heal through the unblocking of the life energy, leading to a powerful and energizing, yet relaxing treatment. The energy flows wherever it is required and can normally be felt as a warm sensation or tingling in the body.

This treatment is ideal for clients suffering from stress, depression, anxiety or following bereavement or purely for relaxation. Many people describe themselves as ‘feeling lighter’ after a treatment.

Some of the benefits of Reiki may be to;

Support the body’s natural ability to heal itself

Balance the body’s energies

Loosen blocked energy

Promote a state of relaxation

Give a sense of well-being on all levels – physical, mental, emotional & spiritual

A Hopi Ear Candle treatment (also known as Thermo-Auricular Therapy) is a pleasant and non-invasive treatment of the ears, used to treat

A Hopi Ear Candle treatment (also known as Thermo-Auricular Therapy) is a pleasant and non-invasive treatment of the ears, used to treat a variety of conditions. I use only original Biosun ear candles which are produced to excellent standards. These ear candles induce a revitalising heat upon the head and ears, which soothes, relieves and relaxes. Though results vary from patient to patient, some clients have reported Hopi Candles may help with a wide range of disorders in ears and/or sinuses and have a relaxing calming effect for stress disorders.

How a Hopi Ear Candle treatment works

The process of Hopi ear candling involves a specially designed hollow candle made of natural ingredients. When the candle is lit & one end gently inserted just inside the ear a moderate suction action is created called the chimney effect. The suction that is formed draws the impurities from within the ear and helps to loosen excess or compacted ear wax.
The movement & energy of the flame sends tiny vibrations down the candle which gently massages the tympanic membrane (also known as the ear drum). This massage causes any excess pressure within the inner ear to be released. This may be particularly helpful for people who suffer from pain in the ear when flying or diving.

The number of Hopi treatments that may be needed to help a problem depends on the length of time you have had the condition and what condition you are suffering from. The longer you have had the condition the more treatments that may be needed before there is a noticeable improvement however this varies for each person. Although anyone can be treated with Hopi Ear Candles, including children, there are cases where Hopi should not be used as follows;
•	Infection or inflammation of the ear
•	Surgery on the ear within the last 3 months
•	Perforation of the ear drum
•	Lack of ear drum
•	Auricular cysts
•	Grommets, drains or ventilation tubes fitted
•	Known allergy to candle contents (beeswax, honey extracts, sage, St John’s Wort, camomile, beta-carotene and organically grown flax)

Providing you have none of these existing conditions you can have a Hopi Ear Candle treatment.

What a typical treatment session entails

You are asked to lie comfortably on one side and listen to relaxing music. The candle is then lit at one end & the opposite end is gently placed into the auditory canal. I hold it in a vertical position, my hands keeping the candle steady and preventing any ash falling on to you. You will experience a pleasant crackling sound as the candle burns and a warm comfortable feeling. As the candle burns down, the residue ash (if it falls) will just turn to dust. The candle is then taken away & a brief massage is given round the ear area while you lie there for a few moments before turning over to treat the other ear. You then lie on your back and a massage is given to the face/scalp. Most clients find the whole experience very relaxing & some even fall asleep during treatment.

Price for treatment

30-40mins – £25

FAQ’s about Hopi Ear Candles:

Here is a list of some typical questions about Hopi Ear Candles. If you have a question that is not covered here, please contact me.

Does the residue of the candle go into the ear?
No – the candles are made with a filter inside which prevents anything going into the ear.

Does it help to have a treatment before taking a flight?
Yes it may help – if you have no ear infection or other conditions for not having a treatment on the list above and if you suffer with ears or sinus problems, it is a good idea to have a treatment prior to your flight to help balance the pressure in the inner ears.

I suffer from a lot of ear wax and often have them syringed. Could I try ear candling instead?
Yes – I have a number of clients who previously endured the discomfort of syringing now visit me for hopi treatment instead.

How will I feel after a treatment?
Most clients find the treatment relaxing and regularly describe a “slight relieved feeling” in the ears and head but also a relaxing and calming effect on the whole system. Try to drink a glass or 2 of water after your treatment.
